First Transnational Meeting in Spain in January 2015

On 29th and 30th January 2015 the Kick-Off for the ESTPORT project was held in Murcia, Spain. This meeting brought together the members of the consortium face to face for the first time. This presented an excellent opportunity to meet all the partners and discuss the project in greater detail.

The objectives and desired outcomes were defined as well as the expected benefits. A major topic of the kick-off meeting was the distribution of tasks regarding the production of the project’s deliverables, such as a need analysis of the target group (EU-project managers), a project website and dissemination. 

Besides organizational issues, a cultural program had been prepared, which included a tour UCAM Catholic University of Murcia. On the second day of the meeting, the partners were given the opportunity to discuss the topical issues in more detail, provide ideas and discuss each work package in greater detail as well as to discuss potential developments post programme in order to ensure sustainability.

It was a very fruitful get-together and all partners are excited for the next few months to come, we will have much work to do and face unforeseen challenges, but everybody is already looking forward to the next meeting which will take place in early 2016.

Thursday, 29.01.2015

9:10-9:25 Official Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor and Head of the International Relations Department from UCAM Dr. Pablo Blesa Aledo stating the importance of internationalization of the university systems and the international achievements of UCAM.

9:25-9:35 Official Introduction of the ESTPORT project by the project coordinator and Dean of the Sport Faculty Dr. Antonio Sánchez Pato.

9:35-9:50 Presentation of the Sport Tutorship at UCAM model by Dr. Juan Alfonso Garcia Roca and Dr. Antonio Calderón stating UCAM’s support system for student athletes through studies free of charge and organizational support.

9:50-10:00 Presentation of the Institution and the Sport Tutorship model of the University of Thessaly by Dr. Samantzis Babis.

10:00-10:15 Presentation of the Institution and the Sport Tutorship model of the University of Malta by Dr. Andrew Decelis explaining the difficulties of professional athletes’ support in the Maltese sport system.

10:15-10:45 Presentation of the Institution and the Sport Tutorship model of the Università degli Studi di Roma “Foro Itálico” by Dr. Emanuele Isidori.

10:45-11:00 Presentation of the Institution and the Sport Tutorship model of the Leeds Trinity University by Dr. Julie Brunton which has not yet implemented a full sport tutorship model.

11:00-11:15 Presentation of the Institution and a variety of past European projects of Europa Community Limited by Malgorzata Kuklinska.

11:15-11:45 Coffee break

11:15-13:30 Presentation of the financial rules and the reporting phases of the project by Lahila de Sola Carrón and David Heiser with questions and answers by all participants. During that discussion the partners from the Foro Italico and Europa Community Limited voiced concerns about the use of distribution of task concerning the organization of meetings. As a conclusion the partners compromised that the decision of the financial responsibility and the distribution of funds for the related subsistence costs for each meeting will be managed by the hosting organization with due time. (The notification of the event will be communicated by the hosting organization towards the partners with a minimum of 3 months in advance.) 13:30-14:00 Meeting with the president of UCAM, José Luis Mendoza Pérez, explaining the vision of UCAM and the importance for the dual system at the university and the significance of the institutional support for their lives and their academic success.

14:00-16:00 Lunch

16:00-16:10 Presentation of Workshop 1 “Development of a Network at regional, national and European level (in at least 5 countries) among project partners, related to the topic “Sport Tutorship” covered by the project”, by Antonio Calderón and supported by the others UCAM project team members. The partners agreed that more organizations can be included as partners to enrich the project.

16.10-16:40 Presentation of Workshop 2 “Production of a comparative study/analysis of the situation on the academic and sport regulations applied by the Universities to the students/athletes”, by Antonio Calderón and supported by the others UCAM project team members. The partner from Leeds voice their concern about the short time limit in regards to the questionnaire being presented also to the ethics committee of each partner. The Italian partner presented also an existing study by a Latvian organization which can be used (with specific modifications) to help modeling the projects questionnaire which will help to speed up the process of developing the questionnaire.

16:40-17:00 Presentation of Workshop 3 “Development of an innovative “Sport Tutorship” programme in the form of a Handbook which will combine methodology, guidelines, recommendations and conclusions”, by Antonio Sánchez Pato and supported by the others UCAM project team members. The partners concluded that also joint publications among the consortium should be issued during the project to increase the impact and visibility.

17:30-18:20 Presentation of Workshop 4 “Implementation and validation of the Sport Tutorship programme in the participating Universities, for at least one academic year, by Antonio Sánchez Pato and supported by the others UCAM project team members.. The partners agreed on the duration, target group and dissemination efforts of each workshop.

18:20-18:40 Presentation of Workshop 5 “Organization and development of 4 Workshops on Dual Career issues (2) and on the Sport Tutorship programme (2). Target audience would range from students-athletes, Sport Faculties’ staff to public authorities and other sport stakeholders”, by Antonio Calderón and supported by the others UCAM project team members. Every partner agreed to the workshops to take place at April and October of 2015 and 2016 with the participation of the aforementioned stakeholders under the organization’s own specifications.

18:40-19:00 Presentation of Workshop 6 “Communication and dissemination strategies of the project” by Malgorzata Kuklinska. The partners agreed that the Europa Community Limited will design the project’s website, the logo and the dissemination material. Before finalizing the design for the aforementioned dissemination tools, the Europa Community Limited will present drafts and the decision will be made by a vote of the partners. The designs should be finalized until March 2015. The buying of the internet domains (www.sporttutorship.eu and www.sporttutorship.com) will be the obligation of UCAM.

10:15-10:20 Official opening of the second day of the kick-off meeting by Antonio Sánchez Pato.

10:00-10:45 Presentation of the tutorship model and dual career system at Auburn University, Alabama (USA). The integrated career center at the Auburn University will be implemented in the idea of the impact of this project.

10:45-11:05 Presentation of the multimedia and dissemination strategy of UCAM by Pablo Guardiola with a dialogue about branding of the project’s identity with the Europa Community Limited which will present drafts of the design to all partners.

11:05-12:45 Recording of the statements about the tutorship model and dual career system in the Polymedia format for Julie Brunton and Emanuele Isidori. Dual Career, Sport and University in Italy Dual Career, Sport and University. Leeds Trinity University
